Aspects Of Theatre Program Provides Theatre For Children
NACC Theatre has developed a new program for the youth of the area. ASPECTS OF THE THEATRE is a program that will enable K-12 students of Dekalb and Jackson Counties to see three productions during the school year. These productions will be performed in the Tom Bevill Lyceum and students will be bused from their schools. The productions are geared for children of different ages. This past year grades 1 through 9 saw the Birmingham Children's Theatre perform three productions : SNOW GIRL (grades 1-3), DIARY OF ANNIE FRANK (grades 7-9), and THOMAS EDISON: WIZARD AT WORK (grades 4-6). Eight thousand students participated in last years program. "As a teacher in the DeKalb County School Systems, I can say that we have a wonderful opportunity for our classes to experience the arts at the Northeast Community College Theatre. This past year we had the chance to bring our students to see several visiting productions, like THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, which provided additional educational benefits that would not have been available without the program ASPECTS OF THE THEATRE", (Faye Williams, Plainview High School). "Many thanks for including the Scottsboro Junior High School eighth graders in the audience of THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK. All of our students benefitted greatly from having had the experience of the theatre. Many of my students commented that seeing the play was their favorite part of our year. I am happy that we were able to take advantage of the opportunity to have our students experience the theatre as it should be done", (Amy Thebus Westmoreland, Scottsboro Junior High School).

A COMMUNITY BENEFITS FROM HAVING A STRONG ARTS PROGRAM IN ITS SCHOOL
Many times we recognize excellence in educatin by visible measures. The visible measurement may be exhibits, performances, and most of all, by scholarships awarded. What we must realize is that the true achievement of excellence is not just visible presently, but will serve the student throughout their entire life. From past experience, empirical research and on-going studies, we can say conclusively that a strong program in the arts will produce the following:

1. The arts stimulate a child's ability to learn.

2. The arts contribute to higher SAT and ACT scores.

3. The arts help children to learn other subjects.

4. The arts enhance productivity and understanding.

5. The Arts encourage creativity.

6. The arts teach critical thinking skills.

7. The arts prepare young people for the world of work.

Alabama has a cultural heritage that is rich with musicians, artists and writers. Many of our artists are known around the world. Because of this heritage, we must speak up for the arts in our schools, It is a small price to pay for the knowledge the arts give us.

Northeast is proud to sponsor an arts program called ASPECTS OF THE THEATRE for the youth of this area. We hope this endeavor will link culture and the young student and that it will enhance each child's ability to see and understand humanity in the past and in the future.
